Safety First
Replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors throughout the cabin. Follow the instructions to test them to ensure they are functioning properly. These detectors save lives!
Love Your Logs
Is it time to wash and stain the exterior logs of your cabin? Check for a buildup of dirt, pollen and grime. Use a cleaner recommended by the log cabin manufacturer. This is also the time to make sure that the stain is still doing its job. Spray an area with water to make sure that the water still beads up. If the water absorbs, it’s time to apply a new coat. Get Your Mind in the Gutter
Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause serious problems. The drainage system should divert water from your cabin’s exterior and foundation walls. Make sure the drainage areas are free of leaves and debris. Clogged gutters can lead to damaged exterior surfaces and to water in your basement.

Who doesn’t love sitting by the fireplace on a chilly night? Plan ahead and hire a chimney sweep before you build the season’s first fire. Chimney sweeps inspect for damage, animal nests and creosote buildup all of which can lead to dangerous chimney fires if left unchecked.

Clean and replace filters in your furnace or heating system. Clean filters make your heater work more efficiently and reduce the amount of dust that is floating around your log cabin.

Gaps in caulk and weather-stripping can account for a 10% of your heating bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Check your windows and doors inside and out for leaks and drafts. Fall is a good time to aerate your lawn. This allows air, moisture and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. The result is a healthier and more attractive lawn.
Walk the Walk
Inspect your walkway and driveway for uneven areas and cracks. Level out pavers that could be a tripping hazard. Repair cracks that will worsen when winter comes. Tighten loose railings.
Dryer Fire Avoidance
Lint buildup in the dryer vents can make your dryer work less efficiently and even cause a fire. You can hire a duct cleaning specialist to clean the vents or clean them yourself with the proper vacuum cleaner attachments. Make sure you unplug the dryer first!
