Log Homes, Log Home Kits and Prices

PCN Manufacturing Tour

0:00
hi I’m Bill Keller one of the owners and founders of Conestoga log cabins and
0:05
homes and today we’re going to be touring our manufacturing facility here
0:08
in Lebanon Pennsylvania this is where we make all our log cabins and homes like
0:13
you see here to shift our customers resorts and also individuals worldwide
0:18
so if you’re ready to see how old world craftsmanship combined with new world
0:23
technology that lets get started so if you look up on the screen you can see
0:30
that we build a whole 3d model of this cabin what we can do is we can take it
0:36
and section it anyway we like and so we can look at pretty much any part of the
0:42
cabin or house in any of you so we can really get and very specific with the
0:50
type of information that we can model and also very important thing is we can
0:56
send a lot of this information directly out to the shop so here is going to be
1:00
cutting it down from the top and so you get a little bit better view when he
1:05
gets down to the bottom he can rotate it and we can see it looking out looking at
1:11
it from the top
1:18
one of the other great advantages of making a 3d model is we can actually get
1:22
to see what the cabins going to look like before they’re even bill you can
1:26
take a look at some of these renderings that you see some of these units have
1:30
been built and some of them haven’t been built but we can take them and work with
1:34
them at different scenes you can see some have snow somehow grass put him in
1:39
the woods and over here you can even see some of the interior shots we can act
1:45
kitchens and and other furnishings to really get very lifelike images so we
1:51
give our customers a much better image of what they’re going to be receiving
1:55
even though it’s a completely custom unit we are out in our manufacturing
2:03
facility in all bethlehem steel building actually we have about a hundred
2:08
thousand square feet to put in terms that might be more familiar with that’s
2:13
about two and a half acres under room really the starting of our process
2:18
really begins with our logs it’s one of the foundation foundation points of our
2:26
system and one thing that really sets us apart is laminated you can see that
2:32
they’re made out of multiple sections does a lot of things for us it allows us
2:37
to make a straighter stronger dryer and even longer log so we’ve taken these
2:44
they come in rap as you can see we pull the wrapping back make sure we take out
2:51
any staples and now we’re getting them prepared to go to the milling operation
2:55
going over to the motor in just a second here but one of the nice things about
3:02
eliminated log is it allows us to get all the moisture out even out of the
3:07
center one of the unique properties of wood is that it has a tendency to shrink
3:12
but it shrinks in this direction not generally in the right direction so most
3:17
people have a standard to build a house there stud you’re standing upright and
3:22
so they don’t see all restrictions in their home but in a log home you can see
3:27
shrinkage of several inches unless you use a laminated log or you take the
3:32
extra time to really drive the log and get most of the moisture out of the wood
3:37
one of the important things about our laminated product and the work that we
3:42
used a lot of people ask about is a green and that seems really the new
3:48
thing now
3:50
we want to make sure the working environment
3:53
and where this has cut its kind in Canada it’s a Native American honey
3:58
brown they say that special pattern to make sure that there’s always room for
4:05
one section the other other always undercover they go into the woods
4:10
basically where this plan as soon as bill and then they started cutting 1,000
4:20
square area they cut in a checkerboard pattern and when they’re finished
4:26
cutting they come in and they read plant including the road just a go back to the
4:31
plant and the horse along the other green thing about the product is we can
4:36
use smaller sections you noticed this is a very small section of wood and we can
4:40
use that for intercooler which makes us able to use a lot smaller pieces that we
4:45
can normally years and irregular log home you just saw logs being milled but
4:51
there’s a very important step that comes after that we’ve got a couple of samples
4:55
here so you can see before we go see the notching machine what we hear what we’re
4:59
actually talking about we have a couple different sections sister single wall
5:03
unit and you can see how it interlocked and that’s going to be happening here
5:07
the not sure we do two different types of sections a singalong and we also do a
5:13
dork global system which has two to four walls and also we can insulate in
5:18
between this provides incredible thermal efficiencies and just make sure how much
5:25
more energy-efficient building it also adds a nice feature being able to run
5:31
the waters between the logs whereas most homes have to run it in the logs or in
5:37
special cases that they make sure just makes the assembly of building now much
5:41
easier
5:44
one of the other unique things about our process compared to other log home
5:49
manufacturers as we cut out for all the electrical components and the electrical
5:54
boxes which you can see one that’s already been cut out here so we have a
6:00
special rounding operation where we do that offline we also talked about the
6:06
battle on the top and the bottom of a large just just mainly as a nice
6:14
decoration just add some more definition of our lives and our customers really
6:18
seemed to like the looks are very proud of our product and show a lot of
6:23
cummings talked about branding we actually do it we’re getting ready in
6:27
this process actually ran the logs for their logo and we also put a serial
6:32
number on each one of the cabins and this would go right on the inside of the
6:37
front door right beside a light switch
6:44
take a few seconds and back and forth that just helps it to get deeper into
6:51
the wood once he gets it set up there for a little bit and you can see as he
7:00
cut a check to see how the brand coming out just to make sure he gets the best
7:04
imprint possible
7:20
one of the other things that we do and has been a real focus of us here at
7:25
Conestoga is to make sure that we have the traceability of all our part to make
7:30
sure that we can provide consistent quality and provide the parts right and
7:37
correct the first time and this is what we call a job traveler this list all the
7:42
different parts and he’s going to need to be packing in this box has a place to
7:46
put a check mark here to check that he’s actually put it into the box to ensure
7:52
that we are not just checking things off and we’ve got each and every part into
7:57
the box when it goes out the door
8:01
let’s take a look as we travel down the pathway here we do a lot of different
8:07
components from windows we use quality Marvin wood windows and Andersen windows
8:13
and summer homes but in our cabin is mainly used Marvin wood windows we do a
8:18
lot of bed components that’s really for the campground resort industry but we do
8:23
do it for some individuals as well
8:26
summer cabins are on the smaller side so we had to design specially designed
8:31
furniture to fit in tight spaces we do anything in this area you can see some
8:38
of the Finnish railings that we saw the trim room asset to this point we’ve also
8:46
added a top railing as well give it a much more finished appearance and also
8:51
an end cap which will go up against the side of the building
8:57
a little further we do a couple different kinds of railings so we have a
9:04
more traditional pressure-treated slack or pick it
9:17
if you look at these you’ll notice these are what we call T champ this is what I
9:21
was telling you would fit in between the groom’s around all the windows and doors
9:25
in the cabin this really will never be seen it’s mainly for just to provide
9:31
extra rigidity around the windows and doors down here you’ll see some are trim
9:38
components these would have all been made on the CNC router that we saw
9:42
making the slats for the railings you can see how their group down here and
9:48
there also at the same time would put a 45 degree bevel just a given a little
9:53
extra special appearance for all-round all the windows and doors here you can
9:57
see some of the finished product that’s coming off the machine one of the nice
10:01
things I guess it’s incredibly fine cut its precision cut you can also see that
10:06
we make allowances for all the beams this would be a beam pocket the beam
10:11
would fit into here one of the other things that we do is if we have a window
10:16
and the gable and we can also cut out for the window here you notice that
10:20
there’s an octagon window that’s going to be put into this place here this will
10:24
be put on in sight but we have one here that you can see how fit right in there
10:30
the nice thing is one by precluding all the components it reduces the assembly
10:34
time it also makes her a cleaner and nicer installation the windows and doors
10:40
or showroom we’ve just completed this cabin last week actually and why are we
10:49
going to see what the finished product actually looks like as we travel along
10:53
here you can see these are some of the railings that we saw when we were out in
10:57
the trim area this is what the finished product looks like this has been stained
11:04
using the stains and finishes that we provide over here in the corner you can
11:11
actually see how the interlocking system works this is also one of our single
11:16
wall systems but you can see how tight fitting the corners are and actually the
11:22
laminated portion of the log unless you look very closely is hardly even
11:27
noticeable
11:31
head inside now we can take a look see what’s in here this model is actually
11:40
one of our most popular models it’s called King we have several different
11:44
variations of this model and as you can see here we have a great room this is
11:50
mainly used for either resorts or also for individuals kind of a getaway it’s
11:56
about 1,100 square feet and we have the main room here and then you can also see
12:03
that we’ve added this kitchen area we also produce this in our trim area one
12:12
of the unique features that we’ve added to this cabin just to kind of really
12:16
open up the space is to hang top support of the stairs were hanging out for one
12:24
of the beams that just really opens up this area so we could get rid of the
12:27
post in here even sells for about 44,000 43,000 and then of course you can add
12:36
options along with it as well have some closet areas and storage and this is a
12:43
two bedroom with a lot this really work comfortably sleeps 6 maybe even eight
12:52
people are depending on how long you’re planning on staying
12:58
the kids bedroom or guest bedroom set up here
13:13
this year is not one of our solid log walls this is some of the material that
13:17
would come off the motor that we would have said that you would have seen this
13:20
is barn siding and sexually won by six material made to look exactly like our
13:26
logs bathroom here and we can see this is a special countertop that we had made
13:36
special for this this is a special concrete countertop but again we’ve kind
13:42
of done something a little bit different in this room we whitewash the walls just
13:46
to get the logs a little bit of a different look and to break up some of
13:52
the feeling of some people say that’s a little too much would for me so we can
13:57
do that by just changing the color of the wood as well
14:07
one of the nice things and features that we’ve added is a fireplace as well this
14:15
is electric fireplace that we’ve adding just gives us a nice ambiance but as
14:19
you’re looking down here you also get a good look at our flooring this is the
14:23
number one damn southern yellow pine flooring that we had in that we showed
14:27
you the motor only thing that we did too it was we sanded it we stand it and then
14:33
we put three or four coats of polyurethane on just to make sure that
14:37
it has a durable finish we come to the end of our tour I hope you enjoyed it if
14:47
you would like more information at Conestoga log cabins and homes please
